We Have Help

Whenever someone makes a blanket statement like, “we’ll just pray about it” or “the Lord will work everything out”, do they fully understand what they are really saying? Think about, we, as finite, powerless, and insignificant creatures, have the opportunity to call upon the God of the universe for strength and guidance. Furthermore, we are promised that He will hear us and show us great and wonderful things that we do not know, as Jeremiah 33:3 promises. But if this couldn’t get anymore crazier or life changing, God also has given us a Helper, someone who will lead and guide us in knowing the truth. As a leader within a team or group, there is one key practical application point with this recognition and understanding. It is simply awareness. Are we reminding our teams of the need for prayer, seeking the Spirit’s guidance, and having open ears to hear what He might be saying to us? This shouldn’t be a one-time or even ongoing thing, instead it should be a constant lifestyle. I recently heard a ministry leader share that they will not hire someone for ministry unless that person spends at least 30 minutes every morning and evening with the Lord. In their opinion, how can you lead others if you yourself aren’t immersed in prayer and God’s Word? I wholeheartedly agree and this is an area I can also certainly improve in. When we truly understand the awesome gift we have, every moment and every opportunity should and will be spent before the great I AM in seeking His wisdom and direction.

Very practically, this is an important aspect of Jesus’ ministry that is often overlooked. It can be easy for us to overemphasize Jesus as God but we must also recognize that He was also human and perfected the struggle against the flesh through the working and indwelling of the Holy Spirit. It’s easy to say the Word of God is alive and active and will not return void, it’s another thing to live in a way where it shows we believe it. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” There is no situation we will encounter as a leader where the Word of God cannot speak to it. We may not always see this initially but when we are in tune with the Spirit and His wisdom, we can rest assured we will have an answer when the time comes. This should give us the confidence to engage those we lead, not fearing the questions and obstacles that may arise, knowing we truly have the truth and know the source of it.
